# The Wedding Was in Sirik

On Tuesday, the United States military struck targets across southern Iran as part of its resumed campaign against Iranian military infrastructure. Iran's health minister confirmed 18 civilians killed and more than 100 wounded in the strikes. Among the dead were four people who were at a wedding ceremony in Sirik — a small coastal town in Iran's Hormozgan Province on the Strait of Hormuz. The US strike targeted a location near the ceremony. The ceremony is not a target category under the laws of armed conflict. It was a wedding. Amir-Ali Karimi was four years old.

The war resumed its bombing cycle in September after the 60-day Versailles MOU window expired on August 17 without a deal. The US struck Iran on Tuesday. Iran struck US bases in Kuwait and the UAE in response. The pattern has been running since February 28 — strike, retaliation, strike, ceasefire, MOU, collapse, resumed strikes. Each iteration has produced civilian casualties. The Sirik wedding is one of the most specific single incidents: a gathering of people in a private celebration on the shore of the Strait of Hormuz, struck during a US military operation against southern Iranian targets.

The Strait runs directly past Sirik. The town sits on the Iranian coast at the point where the Strait narrows to its minimum width. The town's proximity to the Strait's navigational chokepoint — the waterway over which both Iran and the United States are simultaneously claiming permanent sovereignty — is the reason that military infrastructure exists in the surrounding area. The wedding was held in the same geographical context as the military targets. Amir-Ali Karimi and the three adults at that wedding were not military targets.

DiploPolis has been documenting what US strikes in southern Iran have produced since February 28\. The Qeshm couple and their two-year-old child — killed by a 2,000-pound Mark 84 bomb on a residential building, confirmed by a New York Times visual investigation. The 18 civilians killed on Tuesday, including the four at the wedding in Sirik. Each incident has been described by US Central Command as a strike on IRGC targets, military infrastructure, command and control facilities and maritime capabilities. Each incident has also produced a death toll that includes people who were not in any of those categories. CENTCOM said it does not target civilians. Iran's Foreign Ministry said: 'Sirik is not a story. The civilians are real. The victims are real.'

Iran's military struck back on Tuesday, hitting satellite communications systems, warehouses and fighter jet hangars at Ahmad al-Jaber Air Base in Kuwait, and targeting US troops and radar stations at Al Minhad Air Base in the UAE. Both Gulf states host US military infrastructure. Both are now regularly struck in Iran's retaliation for strikes on Iranian territory. The war has continued to expand its geographic scope — both sides striking civilian-adjacent targets. One side struck a wedding.

Sirik is 240 kilometres from Qeshm. The Sirik strike happened six months and two days after Operation Epic Fury began. The couple at the Qeshm house were the July accounting. Amir-Ali Karimi, four years old, was the September accounting. The accountability gap remains open. The war continues.
