- Description: Israeli strikes on Gaza rang through the moment of silence on October 7, 2026. Three years since Hamas attacked. 74,000 Palestinians dead. Hamas still armed and present. [At 6:29am on Wednesday, Israeli communities along the Gaza border stood in silence](https://www.euronews.com/2026/10/07/israel-pauses-in-moment-of-silence-to-remember-those-killed-on-7-october?ref=diplopolis.com). It was the exact minute, three years earlier, that Hamas launched its first rockets. While the silence held, Israeli airstrikes on Gaza could be heard ringing out. The moment of remembrance and the ongoing campaign were indistinguishable in the same air. Nobody present needed to be told what that meant. Some things explain themselves.

The third anniversary of October 7 was marked in Israel with state ceremonies, speeches and continued military operations. France 24 reported that five Palestinians were killed in strikes during the anniversary itself, despite a year-old ceasefire agreement that has never been fully observed. Netanyahu presided over a national memorial in Jerusalem. He did not address questions about pre-attack warnings from Egyptian intelligence that he reportedly received. [Former hostage Eli Sharabi co-hosted the national broadcast](https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog%5Fentry/eli-sharabi-opens-national-oct-7-memorial-ceremony-we-lost-so-much/?ref=diplopolis.com): he had lost his wife, daughters and brother to the attack and its aftermath, spent 738 days in captivity and was marking the anniversary in Israel for the first time since his release. He was on the stage. The ceremony proceeded.

Hamas issued a statement calling October 7 a glorious day and a natural response to decades of suffering. This was released while Israeli strikes continued on Gaza. The 1,200 Israelis killed on October 7, 2023, are not disputed facts. The 251 taken hostage are not disputed. The divergence is entirely in what those facts are said to mean and what they are said to justify. Three years of that divergence have produced, by Democracy Now's count citing public health figures, 74,000 Palestinian deaths in Gaza. [Senator Chris Murphy told reporters this week that the Trump administration denied him access to Iran war briefings](https://al-monitor.com/originals/2026/10/us-senator-murphy-says-pentagon-denied-him-access-us-base-qatar?ref=diplopolis.com), in what he described as an effort to conceal the true cost of the US-Israel war on Iran. The count and the concealment allegation appeared in the same day's coverage.

The White House produced its own October 7 development. [The Atlantic reported on Wednesday, citing two administration officials, that the White House has asked the Pentagon to develop options for strikes against Iran before the November 3 midterm elections](https://politicalwire.com/2026/10/07/trump-is-considering-striking-iran-before-the-midterms/?ref=diplopolis.com). US Central Command is preparing those options. Supporters of limited pre-election strikes acknowledge, the report said, that they would not by themselves bring Iran to the negotiating table, restore safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz or lower petrol prices before Election Day. The strikes are being planned anyway. The planning is being done on the anniversary of the attack that started the war that the strikes would escalate.

Three years. [The Strait of Hormuz is in its eighth month of blockade](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026%5FUnited%5FStates%5Fnaval%5Fblockade%5Fof%5FIran?ref=diplopolis.com). The Iran war is in its 223rd day. Gaza has 74,000 dead. Hamas remains present in Gaza, lower profile but armed and organisationally intact. The ceasefire that has theoretically governed Gaza for a year has not governed it. The moment of silence was at 6:29am. The bombs could be heard through it. The next ones are being planned in Washington, timed to an election. The gavel has been coming down for three years. Nobody has yet asked when it stops.
